Ospreys Narrowly Defeated by Hampstead

Gameday: 23rd March 2025

By Manfred Lam

GU14 Ospreys 3 - 4 Hampstead & Westminster (H)

London SC & SE GU14 Tier 1B Pool A Match

Both sides entered this match at an unerringly quiet Surrey setting with the full knowledge that the winner of this tie would firmly put themselves in May’s finals. That said neither side showed any sign of nervousness as the first whistle went. If anything, we witnessed a game of high intensity, plenty of thrust and end-to-end action for spectators to savour.

Ospreys’ interchanges and link up plays were much better than the previous week. That bore fruit with Nendick drawing the first blood by tucking in a rebound in the air after H&W’s keeper blocked a shot from Fegan.

Both sides handed it out and traded crosses from both flanks, but Ospreys managed to hold onto the slim lead at the interval despite Henkes having her goal, with ball deemed high, disallowed. A lapse of concentration from Surbiton saw H&W level within 30 seconds of the restart with the opposition increasingly piling on pressure on the right flank that eventually landed a clean strike in a crowded D.

As the match went on Barwell pushed forward more from the base of the defence and delivered some insightful passes to the delight of our strikers etc. Dunsire Moore added the second with her trademark dribbles, and Fegan slotted in the third after some delightful left side crosses from Henkes.

With thirteen minutes to go H&W levelled the score with some exquisite shots after Ospreys were prevented from extending their two goal lead. Instead H&W scored their winner with less than two minutes of the match remaining.

To be fair, there isn’t much between the two sides, and despite a narrow defeat Ospreys still have a chance to qualify for the finals if the scores next week work in their favour - the least deserved in a largely rewarding season.

Scorers: Nendick, Dunsire Moore, Fegan

Result (HoH): 1-0, 3-4
