Wolves 4 - 2 Berrylands 1s (A)
By Debs Ogun
First league game of the season started with the necessary introductions and welcomes.
Sarah Bray, armed with clipboard and substantial knowledge, chivvied everyone into the warm up on what was looking like a lovely sunny afternoon.
The team took to the pitch and looked like they had been playing together for years. Great attacking play was rewarded after just three and a half minutes with a superb goal from new recruit Lia. The half continued with end to end play, superb defensive work from Blythe and Ellie in the middle and Caitlyn in goal held the lead until just before half time when Berrylands scored a breakaway goal.
Half time was full of positivity after a good first half, not to mention plenty of sweets from our well-travelled captain Lauren! Sarah gave us some clear pointers and off we went into torrential rain!
Today was the day for quick goals - one minute 20 into the second half, Sophie’s great movement on and off the ball was rewarded with a goal! Closely followed at three minutes three seconds by another fine goal from Cuddy (unless their player actually wants to put their name on it!). 3-1 up, this was an usual scenario for the Wolves!
Everyone continued to play well, with Amelie and Catriona staying strong and focused at the back. Joanna, Lauren, Chengai and Lia bridging the gap between the backs and the forwards beautifully, attacking and defending whilst distributing the ball well. Monica, Cuddy, Gemma and Sophie linked perfectly up front, running onto well executed passes and causing problems for the oppo’s defence and goalie.
Berrylands continued to fight hard and scored, making it 3-2, this felt too familiar so the Wolves dug deep, not wanting to let a lead slip away.
More great team play saw Chengai score a great goal, securing a 4-2 win for the Wolves!
Huge thanks to Monica and Cuddy for helping out and being a great part of the team. You’re welcome anytime and a massive welcome to our new players who slotted in perfectly, here’s to a great season together!
Congratulations to Chengai for securing Woman of the Week! Great distribution in the centre, superb runs up the wing, calm driving along the back line, excellent team work and a goal to top it all off!!
