Men's 1s 4 - 1 Hampstead & Westminster (H)
By Surbiton HC
Surbiton Men’s 1s made it two wins from two with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Hampstead & Westminster at home on Saturday evening.
For a second week running, the goals were spread across the Surbiton side, and like against Oxted last weekend it didn’t take long for the first to be scored. A clever slider pass from Conor Williamson picked out a deadly late lead from Nick Bandurak, who maintained his goal-a-game streak with the faintest of touches.
Penalty corner powerhouse Gareth Furlong rocketed in a trademark drag flick to make it 2-0, Surbiton’s number 18 scoring in the 18th minute to get on the scoreboard for the first time this season.
Debutant Nic Morgan put the home side three goals ahead, finishing coolly after a perfectly timed pass from James Gall to put Surbiton firmly in charge of the game going into the half time break.
Hampstead made a breakthrough in the 38th minute with Matt Guise-Brown dispatching a penalty stroke, but Will Calnan made it a game to remember with a deft penalty corner deflection on his first competitive appearance in Surbiton colours at Sugden Road for a decade.
Captain Tim Nurse said: “It was nice to be back at Sugden Road in front of our home crowd, which had a great vibe. The boys put in a very professional performance and one we will look to build on with another away fixture next weekend against a tough Holcombe side.”
Nic Morgan was named Surbiton’s Player of the Match, while Saturday also marked an impressive milestone for umpire Campbell Reeman, who officiated his 200th National League game.
The Men’s 1s have maximum points after two games, but sit third in the table on goal difference, with Old Georgians, Holcombe and Wimbledon also racking up six points at this early stage. Next Saturday holds an intriguing second versus third clash at Holcombe Park under the lights.
