Men's 1s 10 - 1 Reading 1s (H)

Gameday: 22nd November 2025

Surbiton M1 made it a perfect first half of the season with a comfortable 10-1 victory over Reading at Sugden Road on Saturday night.

The hardy crowd who assembled despite the rain that had been falling all day were treated to a goal fest as Surbiton spoilt Reading’s outside chance of making the Top 6 with a strong showing. The first goal came just before the end of the first quarter, with Gareth Furlong dispatching a penalty corner in the 17th minute.

Three second quarter strikes followed, with Will Calnan and Furlong penalty corners either side of a field goal for Stu Rushmere, who has been an influential force in Surbiton’s attack throughout the 2025/26 campaign so far.

Max Anderson made it three goals in three games with a field goal in the 41st minute ahead of his departure to the Junior World Cup with England U21 Men, and Furlong completed his hat trick just four minutes later with another penalty corner rocket.

With Surbiton dominating, James Gall and Jake Payton added to the goal tally to take the home side to 8-0 up before Reading’s Ben Hooper got his team on the board with a field goal going into the final ten minutes of the game.

Dave Goodfield then made it 9-1 and Nick Bandurak left it late, but maintained his outstanding record of scoring in every competitive game he’s played for Surbiton since joining in the summer with a field goal in the 64th minute.

Coach Barry Middleton was delighted with the dominant performance: “Today was a great way to cap off a strong start to the season and I was once again pleased with the intensity we played at and our conversion of chances with multiple different attacking threats. A seven point lead puts us in a good position, but we know we’ll have a target on our backs going into Phase 2 so it’ll be an exciting second half of the season ahead.”

Premier Division restart dates and fixtures are yet to be confirmed, but we expect the action to resume in March. Keep an eye on the club website and social media for the latest updates.
