Men's 2s 1 - 2 Teddington 1s (A)
By Mark Haycroft
A huge local derby up next for Surbiton M2s. The world’s two oldest clubs finally faced each other for the first time in a long time at the upper echelons of the men’s club side. Long has it been since the clubs’ respective first teams have done battle in the Premier League with Teddington trying to work their way back to the top division after a hiatus of many years. Much was made of the fixture in the Teddington social media build up as the W2s and M2s faced Teddington in a double header at Teddington School.
The Seals were looking to put right some of the recent results and performances but up against a Teddington side that had set promotion as a target this season, and away to their opponents, was always going to be challenging. The Seals showed their intent though from the off, repelling early Teddington attacks and taking a deserved lead after 11 minutes with some great forward play and another Ben Hanson goal.
Teddington, not to be perturbed, sustained their attacks and equalised early in the second quarter. The match remained tight with both teams having numerous opportunities and both goalkeepers thwarting each effort. Teddington continued through their PC onslaught with Surbiton holding firm until the gates were breached with only eight minutes to go after some slightly controversial decisions, Surbiton again on the receiving end of several green cards and a yellow for an intentional foul in the circle. Another piece of action that will need video review….VAR anyone?
Withstanding any disagreement on decisions, Teddington were a strong side and the performance put forward by the Seals was encouraging to say the least. A performance to be proud of and empirical evidence to prove that the Seals belong in this league and will be rewarded with results if performances continue in this vein.
