Men's 1s 6 - 3 Brooklands MU (H)

Gameday: 8th November 2025

Surbiton Men’s 1s made it eight wins from eight in the 2025/26 season with a comeback win over Brooklands MU on Saturday evening at Sugden Road.

After a goalless first quarter, there were five goals in the second and it was the visitors who were first on the scoreboard after a powerful penalty corner conversion from Carlon Mentoor flew high into the Surbiton net in the 18th minute.

Seven minutes later the M1 were back on level terms. Dave Goodfield scored his first goal of the season, touching home on the left post after Nick Park, Barry Middleton and Max Anderson combined to get the ball across the circle.

Brooklands then surprised the home crowd by grabbing themselves a two goal lead with another powerful corner effort from Mentoor and a close range finish from James Laver within the space of two minutes. Surbiton won a penalty corner on the stroke of half time, with Nick Bandurak’s superb goalscoring form coming to the fore once again as he ripped a drag flick past the post man. It was 3-1 at the break and despite a solid overall performance, the scoreboard meant the men in white had work to do in the second half.

Pressure of possession and attacking quality did ultimately tell with four unanswered goals for Surbiton after the break. Stu Rushmere scored a penalty corner variation in the 41st minute, followed five minutes later by a head-height first time from Bandurak. Will Calnan’s strong run down the right was rewarded with a scrambled goal in the 47th minute and Rushmere did well to put away a clever diving finish under pressure in the closing minutes.

The Men’s 1s have a big week ahead, with a Thursday Night Lights match against second placed Wimbledon providing the possibility of opening up a five point lead at the top of the table. Next Saturday, it’s the penultimate round of fixtures with Surbiton heading to Southgate for a 17:30 pushback.
