Calypsos & Rangers Play Out Internal League Game
By Manfred Lam
GU16 Calypsos 9 - 1 GU16 Rangers
There was an end of term feel with this match against the fellow Surbitonians, the GU16 Rangers, in an early morning kick off at KGS. Calypsos, however, had a small matter to address - a place in T1 of Phase 2 of the season (a point was enough to clinch the berth).
Nothing could be taken as granted with both teams struggled to fill a full side for a mid-season game. Calypsos came out of the blocks with more zest and Henkes missed a sitter as early as the second minute after Dunsire Moore zip-zapped past the defence within the Rangers D with an inviting pass. Henkes redeemed herself within 90 seconds by slamming in a shot, once again facilitated by Dunsire Moore.
Calypsos were more organised in their defence and poignant in attacks. In particular, the midfield quartet (Thomas, Miller, Bushell and Dunsire Moore) who played with some crisp and deadly passing. A goal each by Bryer and Dunsire Moore before the interval, put this match beyond any reasonable doubt.
The positive momentum stayed with Calypsos in the second half. Bryer slotted in for her second of the match whilst May doubled her score with another thunderous hit. Credit was due to Rangers’ endeavours and they finally scored a consolation in a lapse of Calypsos’ concentration. Miller topped her best performance with a direct hit, whilst Thomas capped her return from injury with her name on the scoresheet. Henkes completed her hat trick and had her fourth of the match – an astonishing feat (13 goals over five games this season).
So Calypsos accomplished their T1 mission and can look forward to an exciting new year. But a rematch date is already in the diary - Calypsos vs Rangers in T2 Cup.
Scorers: Henkes (4), Bryer (2), Dunsire Moore, Miller, Thomas
