Women’s 4s 2 - 1 West Herts 1s (A)
By Maddie Wearne
On a gloomy, rain-soaked battlefield, where the grey skies seemed to echo weeks of despair, the valiant warriors of the Surbiton Women’s 4s strode onto the pitch.
Weeks of bitter defeat weighed heavy on our shoulders, but on this day, we faced West Herts with unshakable resolve.
From the first whistle, the opposition surged forward like a tide of invaders. It wasn’t long before a swift counterattack breached the defensive line, and they slipped the ball into the goal. A 1-0 blow against the 4s, and for a moment, the storm felt colder.
But defeat was not an option. Gathering ourselves, we dug deep. With Neve making excellent leads into the D and Emily and Seren working tirelessly in midfield, each pass, tackle, and sprint became a statement of defiance. The equaliser came not as a whisper but as a roar—a ferocious short corner executed with precision and power. The attack was unstoppable as Lisa secured our first goal of the game. 1-1. Hope rekindled.
As the second half unfolded, the rain became both ally and enemy, soaking players and spectators alike. With no substitutes to call upon, the 4s held the line with unrelenting determination, their exhaustion eclipsed by sheer spirit. The combined strength and skill of Charlotte and Chloe’s attacks, kept the opposition on their toes.
And then it came—the moment of glory. The forward line sliced through the opposition like a spearhead, and with a clean, decisive shot from Lisa, the ball slammed into the goal. 2-1.
Despite taking the lead, our celebration could wait. The game was not over yet. The final minutes were a test of resolve. Mia and Emily (Parmy) shone as they shut down the oppositions attempts to attack. But West Herts continued to pile on the pressure, earning a flurry of short corners. But the team held firm, with Lexi making a series of spectacular saves, and Sunny standing strong in defence.
The final whistle blew, and relief turned to jubilation. The rain, once a tormentor, now felt like a blessing as it washed away the weeks of frustration. Victory had come—not just against their opponents, but against the weight of their own doubts and struggles.
Like warriors on an ancient battlefield, they had stood firm when the odds were stacked against them. This was more than a win. This was redemption.
