Women’s 2s 4 - 2 Guildford 1s (H)
EH Tier 1 Cup
By Maelona Rees
After a long winter break and undefeated in Division 1 South, the 2s were looking to continue their winning streak into their cup game against a well organised Guildford side.
With the 2s missing a few players, they rose to the challenge once again. After a brilliant through ball from Yo-Yo to Issy Yonge, Issy flicked it over the keeper and into the net to put us 1-0 up.
Then a few minutes later, a questionable flying tomahawk by Guildford ended at the back of Surbiton’s net to make it 1-1.
Surbiton stuck to the team’s plan and continued to press Guildford with some strong outletting by Noa, Josie R, Pip, Harrie and Shakila saw the 2s advance up both sidelines. A carry down the right hand side and a great post up from Amie led to a corner. From the corner, Noa unleashed a powerful drag into the bottom corner to put us 2-1 up.
Surbiton were on the attack looking for more, allowing our midfielders to cut through the middle of the pitch showing off their silky skills.
Guildford had the ball at the halfway line and were trying to find a way to break the Surbiton defence when suddenly Yonge (POM) came from nowhere, intercepted the ball and danced around their back line and goal keeper to put us 3-1 up.
An early ball across the D left Tilly on the P-spot after posting in front of her defender leading to the Surbi 2s going 4-1 up.
Guildford never gave up and tried to get back into the game by trying to hit us on the counterattack, but Surbi were able to nullify their attacks .
Attacking once again, Guildford continued to look for an opportunity and managed to send the ball across the D and their forward was able to sneak the ball into the back of the net.
During the last ten minutes of the game a green card was given for a “push in the back” by Maelona. The game ended with a win for Surbiton.
The Dogs’ next match will be in the league against Barnes.
