Women’s 6s 2 - 5 Tulse Hill & Dulwich 3s (H)
By Ellie Hatch
The sun was shining and spirits were high as the W6s entered into their second home game of the season. We took to the tennis courts for a fabulous warm up led by yours truly (or not so fabulous seeing as it partially landed me DOD). With a few shooing of chickens and kicking of cows we were raring to go… or we would’ve been if I remembered to bring the balls over (strike two in getting DOD). Despite all this, we were feeling good; balls and first aid kit were retrieved and warm up went on well.
It was now time to face the opposition. Game faces were on and we were ready. We began with a strong performance in our defence line holding out the oppo, some fab dribbling by the mids towards goal, and out of danger, and great positioning by the forwards eager for an early goal. We battled hard, desperate to shake off our unfortunate losing streak. A slight blip in efforts saw us 1-0 down, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed. This was something Iona made sure of as she bagged us the next goal with a lovely hit. A neck-and-neck first half saw us level at half time, 1-1.
A lovely spurring on half time talk from our impromptu coaches, Jane and Francis, as well as El Capitano Sammy, and we were ready to continue battle. Fuelled by a wonderful array of half time sweets, we were back on the pitch.
We fought on, with some excellent passing and dribbling down the wing by Zoe and Tish, we continued to be goal hungry with Val and Tarryn ready to poach. However, despite our efforts and some great saves by Hutch as per usual, the opposition wore us down and within a short period of time, THD (as they called themselves) had put away three more goals against us – one of them I might add was a complete fluke… not that I’m bitter.
A rather unfortunate turn of events for the 6s, but we remained determined as we battled on. Tarryn specially made her best attempts to take them down, quite literally with a ball to their face.
As the game drew closer to the end, the 6s saw themselves fighting on with many short corners, and a stunning goal from Iona being converted - that’s our POM! As well as an almost goal from Tarryn if the umpire hadn’t decided against it with an unfortunate early whistle blow. I would also like to add that Sinead made some wonderful runs, and even some shots in the D, that’s our centre back!
We kept going, but it wasn’t meant to be as another goal was put away by the oppo saw us through to the end of the game.
Frustrations were high, but nothing a curry and cake couldn’t fix (Happy birthday Kirst). We go again next game, and continue to fight to break our luckless streak.
