Women’s 6s 0 - 0 Wimbledon 5s (H)
By Ffion Church
Hoping to build from the win last week, Surby 6s faced Wimbledon at home for an early push back.
Both sides came out strong and the match appeared fairly even. Wimbledon made a few breaks, but nothing our strong defensive line couldn’t handle. Some great saves from Noah and interceptions and runs from our POM Sofia kept us well and truly in the game.
It was then our turn to put some pressure on Wimbledon with numerous breaks forward and shots at goal. Our press worked well and Wimbledon often struggled to string a pass from their 16s.
We went into the second half at 0-0 desperate for a goal. Some more desperate than others, with Sinead making a dash from one D to another to try get on the score sheet.
The return of Iona meant the return of Iona’s dad and his sideline encouragement. Safe to say Iona didn’t share the same enthusiasm as the rest of us to hear her dad’s voice. She didn’t let this faze her though as she almost scored what would’ve been goal of the season, I’m sure of it.
Niamh was relieved of her DOD duties this week following a performance from yours truly which rivalled Bambi on ice. A stick to the face, getting floored by the oppo, falling over my own feet - it was not my day. Unfortunately for me, all my falls and fails were live streamed so there was no avoiding the DOD votes this week.
We saw the final few minutes out with our fair share of attacking penalty corners, one of which most definitely certified my DOD status after my strike at goal hit Aashney straight in the stomach (sorry!). Unfortunately, we were still in the same boat as last week with our penalty corner conversation rate.
A solid performance which gives us plenty to build on for our game away to Teddington next week, where our main aim will be scoring a goal from a penalty corner.
