Women’s 6s 0 - 2 Wanderers 4s (A)
By Sinead Goodden
Surbiton Women’s 6s were left ruing a slow start as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Wanderers W4. The game began with a comedic moment as a mix-up in the starting lineup saw the team take to the field with ten players for the opening minutes. One might think the captain would be DOD for the starting lineup mix-up…but alas, apparently keeping mud off one’s astros is a more worthy reason.
Despite the early hiccup, Surbiton battled hard throughout the match, with goalkeeper Sophie pulling off some remarkable saves to keep her side in the game. The defence, marshalled by Skipper Sammy, faced relentless pressure from Wanderers' attacking trio. Niamh's interceptions were crucial in breaking up Wanderers' play, while Kirst and Sinead worked tirelessly to contain their opponents' speed and send one of them off the back line time and time again.
In midfield, Becky put in a tireless shift, battling for every ball and trying to provide an outlet for her team. Ffion, Tish and Lila also worked hard in the midfield, but Surbiton struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Up front, Iona, Aashny, Tarryn, and Hatchy fought valiantly but were unable to make a breakthrough. Seren, who deservedly received some votes for POM for her outstanding work rate, was a constant threat.
Wanderers capitalised on Surbiton's defensive lapses to score two goals in the first half, leaving the visitors chasing the game. Despite Surbiton's best efforts, they were unable to find a way back into the match and suffered a disappointing defeat.
Notwithstanding the loss, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. Sophie's goalkeeping display was exceptional, and she was deserving of the POM award, while the defence put in a valiant effort against a strong Wanderers attack. Seren and Becky’s work rate were standout performances, and the team's spirit never wavered. Surbiton will be hoping to bounce back in their next match and get their season back on track.
