Women’s 2s 2 - 2 Wimbledon 2s (A)

Gameday: 5th October 2024

By Cecily Moorhead

The day had a brilliant start in the changing rooms of our most loved team, Wimbledon. Wimbledon were kind enough to play in white, some many say it’s an attempt to get in our heads, but we pull off both green just as well and it does not phase us one bit (“actually brings out my tan” - Katie). Next, Nat rocking up “late” with her photographic evidence of her being on time (think that’s a fine in itself), followed by my realisation that I had left my skort in the car, and a kind agreement from the team that Lilie wouldn’t find out about it… I was doing great in Lilie’s eyes with my smart clothes and sweets (little did she know).

Next, a thorough team talk from Rorro, helped us get into the zone. After a top notch warm up (in trackies) the match commenced!

The match started off with a slightly dodgy first half even with most of the possession. We struggled at the beginning with the press in the middle as they had a free screen in the middle causing a tad bit of confusion, but after a minute we solved the problem comfortably and for the rest of the game they weren’t too bothering. After some attempts on goal and Jose deciding to flatten herself, Wimbledon annoyingly got a goal. Followed by me getting a green card (for a clean tackle), we kept positive and pushed through with some more attacks at goal but still managed to let a second goal through.

Half time came. After a not so good first half Rorro gave us ten minutes of clear instructions on how we needed to go about the next 35 minutes. We knew we hadn’t lost the game yet and we were more determined than ever to not let Wimbledon win. Our positivity, after three packets of sweets and a packet of chocolate, was skyrocketing.

The whistle blew for the second half and within minutes Wimbledon didn’t know what was coming for them. Emma was coming. A very solid hit from the top of the D, flew through the goalie’s legs (absolutely superb). This gave us another boost of energy with some brilliant transferring and passing in and around with some great connections between Ella, Amy, Emma and Lilie, but we were still struggling to just get something at goal.

Jem made some FANTASTIC saves that kept us in the game, thanks Jemma! Nat bossing it down the left created some more chances, and a couple short of corners (some great hits from Josie), a goal was bound to come soon. Keeping to the structure, a sublime deflection goes top corner from Amie to make it 2-2. It was now a scramble to get the third goal with the whole team doing literal shuttle runs up and down the pitch, unfortunately we didn’t make it over that last hurdle but we cannot fault the efforts put in in the second half. Solid job all!

Echoing Lilie’s words, it takes a lot for a team to come from losing to then winning or drawing and it shows a lot about the team and shows high potential for the rest of the season. Surbiton only like winning but to come away with a draw and not a loss, can’t fault that. The score does not reflect the game and the amount of possession we had over them, they took their couple of chances and executed and we need to get better at putting away our TONNES of chances.

We adventured to The Wimbledon Club for some quick match teas. An EXTREMELY large portion of lasagna came and I think it’s safe to say that one portion of the lasagna could feed all of us, but it was very kind of them.

Followed by a vote for POM which ended up with Ella and Emma with a joint amount of votes, very much well deserved to both for sure. And DOD was somehow quickly voted to me as the whole team ratted me out, thank you all.

Safe to say the day finished well, another enjoyable day with the team and bring on next week’s training.
