Sirens 0 - 7 Old Kingstonian 2s (A)
By Victoria Tyson
The large black spider overseeing our pre-match team talk was not a good omen. Whilst awaiting the arrival of the umpires, Claire J led the team stretch to get the balls moving in the ‘mummy’ sockets. With the umpires delayed by the dark forces we pushed back with our very own Tracey as interim adjudicator regaled in a luminous pink bib, without a whistle but a teacher’s voice that meant … seriously scary business.
The oppo had a couple of key players who dominated the match, and a lot of young blood. The Sirens had no vampires in their coven this week, but they moved around the pitch in perfect triangulated Ouija board formation.
The ghoulies arrived releasing Tracey for duty in the back line. The battle of the broomsticks commenced in earnest.
The defence (Hayley, Tracey, Sophie, Suz and Victoria W) were at the cauldron face, with the midfield trickin’ a treat (Emma, Claire T, Claire J, and Tessa). Every ball was hard fought for. There were a couple of magic flashes in the forward line (Jenny, Jo, Kate, Nao and Victoria T), a short corner just ten minutes into the first half, but the spells just weren’t working for us. Ava (in goal) was a pin ball wizard.
There were battle wounds - Victoria W nearly lost an eye and Kate’s knee injury will see her unfit to play for a few weeks. Bandages were not required, but potions were (later) consumed.
Twilight descended on Tiffin and without floodlights the game had to be abandoned.
This week’s mistresses of the dark (i.e. players of the match) are Claire T and Suz for their tactical wisdom and fierce spirt.
