GU14 Wrens & Eagles in Flying Starts to Season

Gameday: 6th October 2024

By Mark Rogers

Girls U14 Tier 1

GU14 Wrens 14-0 Wimbledon (A); GU14 Eagles 5-1 Teddington (A)

The arrival of Europe’s foremost hockey competition in South West London had been hotly anticipated and the crowds were not left disappointed as the Wrens and the Eagles both kicked off the season with convincing wins.

The positive mood started from before push back as summer signings Sylvie, Maya, Lizzie, Rosie and Isla were presented with their Surbiton caps, and the latest stars did not seem fazed as the teams stood for “Greatest hits from the Capital FM Playlist”, this season’s official anthem of the London GU14 Tier 1 League.

Playing on the original site of the All England Tennis Club, the Wrens served up plenty of smiles among the travelling fans, as they powered past a spirited and determined Wimbledon side with a series of well executed shots. Further west in Teddington, at the home of Hockey’s oldest club, the Eagles came from behind in a tightly fought first half before stretching ahead in the second to secure the three points.

It was about as good a start to the season as the players could have hoped for, with all the pre-season work paying off, and setting the stage for the season ahead. Sugden Road is now preparing for Round 2 of the League next weekend, with tickets available from the usual outlets.
