GU14 Ospreys Secure League A Title

Gameday: 1st December 2024

By Manfred Lam

A final round of 1H 2024/25 season saw Ospreys deliver a resounding 7-0 win to secure the League A title. The match dominance goes beyond the headline score, and the team notably played with cohesion and free flow (stretching the opposition defence from left to right and front-to-back and vice versa). Such enthusiasm was evident as every Ospreys wanted to be involved in the next move, running into positions, filling the gaps, coaxing each other with support and direction – textbook 101 was on full display.

The match started at a high tempo with Ospreys seizing the possession earlier on, quick interchanges between our front line and midfield saw Osikoya slot in the first goal as early as the third minute. Sparrows were unable to deal with our crosses from either flank, and Saksena and Henkes capitalised inside the D by getting to the ball quicker, timing the strike better and netting their respective goals from a close range. Some of Waller’s efforts were ruled out. A comfortable 5-0 scoreline at the interval.

Sparrows opened the second half with intent and Ribet was called upon to make her presence felt. Meanwhile, Osikoya, Thomas, Amin and Fegan did their share of penetrative runs, stewarded by Constantino and Dunsire Moore, slicing open the crowded space inside the 25, while Lam Fuentes, Barwell and Padget shut out efforts from Sparrows. Fegan’s industry and efforts were paid off handsomely with her clear strikes at goal in each half. Henkes completed her hat trick by slotting in the delivery from Nendick who danced through challenges en route to goal.

The Sparrows goalie had an excellent game, despite being on the losing side, and managed to keep the goal margin to single digits – her agility and goal-stopping skills were fully tested throughout the afternoon. As the time worn on with the match already in the bag, Ospreys had the luxury to have Barwell (Defence) and Henkes (Offence) swap positions to see out the game.

At the end Ospreys played to their physical strength & maturity in the stage of development over a younger and promising team of Sparrows. A well-deserved win to round off the first half of the season with maximum points and a goal difference of +31. This team will get better going by history of consistency and continuity but the acid tests will come in the second half when the league reconvenes.

Until then, happy holidays.

Result: Ospreys 7-0 Sparrows (5-0 at HT)

Scorers: Saksena (2), Fegan (2), Henkes (3)
