Women’s 4s 2 - 3 London Academicals 1s (Away)
By Tarek Abdulla
Blame the coach! The 4s turned up via the pub (don't worry no day drinking!). Having started the season undefeated they where looking to keep the momentum going and the opening exchanges kept the hope alive. It was and end to end start with both teams getting D entries however some good skills in our D from Accies were causing issues, leading to us conceding a number of PCs. And it was off one of these that Accies opened the scoring, having run down the initial shot we failed to deal with second phase and it was cooly lifted into the net.
Some elements of panic crept into our game and good defending by the opposition meant we struggled to make connections. Accies were pushing hard for a second with another near miss off a scramble in the D. And soon they got it. This is where the coach must take some responsibility, stubbornly stuck to a back three despite missing key players might not have been the best choice!
With a rejig at half time the 4s were able to put on pressure higher up the pitch and make better connections in the final quarter. However, the opposition quickly scored a third. It was not all doom and gloom, we had been playing some good hockey throughout the game and the rewards followed, a great diving finish from Carole and another coolly lifted finish fortunately this time from Sian got the score back to 3-2. Unfortunately not enough time left to complete the come back.
A really big shout out to the players coming into the squad for the first time who definitely grew into the game and by the end were dominating their opposite numbers. Especially Phoebe who on her first ever adult game was awarded Player of the Match.
