Sparticans 3 - 1 Cheam 2s (A)
By Simon Fitch
Scorers: Burnside, Grant K, Stevenson
Another three points for the Sparticans in the early morning start at David Lloyd Cheam, a health club with five car parks at last count… we negotiated these successfully to have our 12 players ready to go by 9.55am, which was around 45 minutes after our hosts. We had some confusion around umpires at the start, which unfortunately meant Gary was unable to whistle, but eventually we started with two Cheam umpires taking control.
Our unfortunate run of injuries meant a Sparticans debut for Barney, who seemed to enjoy being freed from the constraints of his goalkeeping pads, and a return for Lewis and Ollie. All of them played very well. We took the game to Cheam from the start and scored two in the first half.
Cheam pulled one back in the second period, but we then scored a third, should have had more but found it hard to find the back of the net.
A win’s a win, though, and we retired to our opposition’s well appointed clubhouse for some teas, Village People on the big screens, and our debrief. This was eventful, mirroring the game, with Moment of The Match finally being awarded to Matt (Sutton, with Anderson taking the week off after a premonition), and Ollie once again winning Spartican of The Day for a great performance in the range of positions we played him in. He received the trophy in front of his Mum and many of us watching the Men’s 1s show us how to do it. We now have four games at home to look forward to in March, all support welcome as ever…
