Sparticans 3 - 4 Old Cranleighans 4s (H)
By Simon Fitch
Scorers: Iffland (2), Fitch
The Sparticans were edged out in a seven goal thriller at Sugden Road on Saturday by an OCs team aiming for promotion from Division 5 this season. Missing defensive lynchpin Jimmer, Skippy Bell moved himself back to centre back and generally reshuffled our pack. OCs attacked from the off and in a rather one sided first half, were unlucky only to score one goal in 35 minutes, with Save It Lee coming to our rescue on multiple occasions.
Half time couldn’t have come soon enough, and we spent the break working out how to compete by taking the game to OCs in the second period. All of our plans seemed in vain when a second goal was conceded, but rather than folding this galvanised the Sparticans into action, and all of a sudden it was Surbiton in the ascendency. Steve scored two goals, the second of which being a strong contender for goal of the season, with Fitchy adding a third to put the Sparticans into the lead for the first time in the game.
Unfortunately, after significant pressure OCs were to add two further goals and despite some last minute excitement as we won a final corner, we almost brought it back again but didn’t quite sneak a draw.
Once we caught our breath, the customary lengthy debrief followed over a top oriental tea by a team which was disappointed not to gain three points but had still enjoyed a hard fought game, controlled by Tony and, unusually, an opposition umpire.
Moment of The Match was awarded to soon to be ex-Long Ditton resident Matt not Freddie Sutton for his pivotal role in the second goal. Many members of the team won votes for Spartican of The Day, but Steve eventually won out which was fitting as he’d brought himself some new clothes specially for the customary photo. We then retired to the darts oche, where we showed we had some way to go to match our success at pool in our multi-sports activities.
Thanks to a larger than average crowd for their support throughout the game; we hope you enjoyed the action and look forward to seeing you back next time, once we’ve all had a lie down after this action packed 70 minutes.
