Sparticans Draw Pre-Season Friendly
By Simon Fitch
Sparticans 3 – 3 Old Cranleighans M5
Following our Friendly Fire game against the Magnets two weeks ago, and an enjoyable practice day last week, the Sparticans took on local rivals Old Cranleighans on Saturday. The Gaffer, and some lesser mortals were unfortunately absent, but we still fielded a strong team against an OCs team who had won the league last year, albeit without some players apparently taking part in an array of cup finals somewhere else.
Thanks to the efforts of so many at the club, thank you, we entered the field safely and securely and started strongly. Eventually we took the lead three times, to be pegged back each time, in a close and competitive game. Our scorers were C Creaser, who was unlucky to also be denied another great goal by an equally impressive save by the OCs keeper, Selfish Steve Iffland via not one but two of their sticks, and Kev with the best goal of the day.
We were rusty and hot but grateful for the run out, and particularly to Ray for umpiring strongly and to Waldo for standing down as umpire as OCs brought their own. As ever, the highlights were really off the field. L Creaser, on his birthday, was awarded Spartican of The Day (in association with Lynx Africa) for a series of great saves after a lengthy, perfectly socially distanced debrief. Absolute best moment was, though, the return of our superb match teas and, in a moment we’re still pinching ourselves around, the addition of table service as we devoured this week’s treats.
We comfortably drunk the kitty dry as we tackled our dehydration; a good start to the season all round.
