L2 Beat University of Birmingham 3-2
By Colin Pike
Surbiton Ladies' second team overcame a determined University of Birmingham squad to win 3-2 at Sugden Road on Saturday afternoon and stay one point ahead of second placed Exe with two games in hand.
Oxford Hawks stayed three points behind Surbiton after a 5-1 win at bottom of the table team the University of Bristol, but Oxford University lost ground after a 3-1 loss at Exe.
Hannah Denison put Surbiton ahead from open play in the twelfth minute but Birmingham were on level terms at half time after Georgina Hampson equalised with a 24th minute penalty corner conversion.
Alice Klugman restored Surbiton's lead in the 45th minute from a penalty corner but Birmingham seemed to have earned a point when Alice Melvin levelled for the visitors with just five minutes to play.
However, Denison broke Birmingham hearts with an open play goal in the penultimate minute to help Surbiton avenge their 1-0 defeat in the Second City in October.
Surbiton visit Oxford University next Saturday (push back 12.30 pm) to complete their 2019 fixtures before the mid-season break in their inaugural national league season.
