Rising Goalkeeping Star Set to Join M1
By Surbiton HC
Surbiton HC is excited to announce that up and coming Scotland & GB goalkeeper Calum Douglas will join the Men’s first team from Southgate for the 2025/26 season.
Already capped for Scotland at the age of 19, Calum has quickly made the step up from the GB Elite Development Programme to join the senior GB squad earlier this season. Known for his outstanding shotstopping ability, he is highly-rated young goalkeeper with a bright future and it’s a signing M1 Head Coach Barry Middleton is delighted to have secured: “I have known Calum for a couple of years and have always believed that he has what it takes to reach the highest levels of the game. As well as his exceptional goalkeeping skills, his focus and drive to get better will be a great fit for what we are trying to build with the Men’s 1s group, and I’m looking forward to seeing him step out in Surbiton colours next season.”
Calum comments, “I am delighted to be joining Surbiton Hockey Club for the new season. It is a fantastic club that is filled with world class players and coaches, who will help me to develop and advance as a player. I’m excited continue to build on the club’s success this year and can’t wait to get the season underway!”
Following an oustanding title-winning first season and top 5 finish in EHL under Player-Coach Barry, plus a successful start for the club’s innovative new Performance Programme, Calum joining Surbiton is a strong indicator of the M1s’ intent to push on and become the dominant force in the domestic game. With the exciting brand of hockey being played by a good blend of established internationals, experienced club players and a dynamic generation of already high-performing younger players, the M1 squad has high expectations for next season and beyond.
James Mazarelo departs the club following three seasons at Surbiton. Barry says, “Maz has been a calm and consistent presence in goal for SHC having joined back in 2022, and since I’ve been at the club this season, his attention to detail and focus on putting in his best performances week in, week out have been important factors in the team’s results. Thank you to Maz for his contribution to Surbiton over the last three seasons.”
