First Team Departures for 2024/25

16th August 2024

By Surbiton HC

As we look forward to a new season of Premier Division hockey starting next month, we want to acknowledge the players leaving us for pastures new.

A number of high profile Women’s 1s players are set to play and coach elsewhere in 2024/25.

Hannah Martin, who has been part of a title-winning W1 team on no less than six occasions since first joining the club in 2016, heads to Australia to play some hockey, taking her out of action for SHC next season.

GB and Scotland star Amy Costello has signed for Dutch Hoofdklasse side HGC for 2024/25, while following an incredibly brave and dedicated period of rehab after an ACL injury earlier this year, goalkeeper Sabbie Heesh takes a break from club hockey for this season.

Having hung up her playing stick after 20 seasons of National League hockey, Wales’ most capped sportsperson Leah Wilkinson is set to take up a coaching role with Old Georgians Women’s 1s.

We also wish good luck to young stars Elani Sherwood and Freya Robinson who head off to university in the US and Nottingham respectively, and club legend Sarah Evans who is unavailable with her young family set to add a new member early in 2025!

A couple of familiar faces depart from the Men’s 1s with the headline being the departure of GB and England star Brendan Creed, who leaves after helping the M1 win multiple indoor and outdoor national titles since his arrival in 2016.

Striker Alex Williams takes on a new challenge at Belgium club Royal Orée after three excellent seasons at Sugden Road, while Ben Stevenson is also stepping away after joining from the University of Nottingham in 2021.

Finally, best wishes also go to the M1 youngsters who leave SHC for university - we look forward to welcoming you back to the club at a later date!

From all at the club, thanks to all our departing first team players for their contributions over the last few seasons and best of luck with your new adventures.
