Tony Smith Tournament Raises £3000 for Charity
By Liselle Carey
For once the weather was kind to us for this year’s Tony Smith Tournament. This annual event is held in memory of the late Tony Smith (a previous Director of Hockey for the Surbiton Junior section) and raises money for CRY and the Ben Williams Trust. Both charities raise funds for cardiac research and are chosen to remember Emma Broad, a previous SHC Colt and Ben Williams, a promising young cricketer, who both lost their lives to sudden cardiac failure.
We are delighted to have raised £3000 for the two charities (£1500 each), so a huge thank you to everyone who supported the event by entering a team or buying a raffle ticket.
Huge thanks must go to the coaching team, and especially Lilie Lamacraft, the Tournament Director on the day, who kept the tournament flowing like a well oiled machine!
This year’s event saw 58 teams representing 18 clubs taking part in this 7 a-side tournament across the course of the day. Travelling from as far afield as Cornwall in the South West and Nottinghamshire in the Midlands and from across London, Surrey and Middlesex, it was great to host new faces and welcome our familiar visitors once again.
Some very competitive hockey was played with impressive talent on display.

The SHC catering team was out in full force with Alison and her team keeping the tea hut stocked with the ever popular bacon rolls, pastries and burgers.
For the first time, we had two professional photographers, Graeme Wilcockson (GMW Sport Images) and Andy Crayford (Crayford Media) in attendance, both of whom took action shots during the day. Their photos will be available to view and purchase by visiting their websites and using the passwords provided to teams in the pre-tournament information pack.
Thanks again to everyone involved in making this year’s event so enjoyable and for helping us to raise money for two very important causes.
