After a superb performance on Saturday to beat the Czech Republic and secure a top three finish in the Hockey Series Open tournament in Vilnius, Lithuania, Wales Women lost their final game of the tournament to the hosts, 3-1 on Sunday.

Wales were ranked ten places above the hosts, but after a goalless first half, it was Lithuania who took the lead in the 38th minute, a well worked penalty corner routine finished off by Toma Petrikaitē against the backboard.

Lithuania doubled their lead at the end of the third quarter, Samanta Jakovleva with another penalty corner conversion.

With nine minutes remaining, Lithuania all but clinched the match with Jurate Juodyte starting and finishing an attacking move, passing the ball for Dovile Jurate to run towards and along the Welsh back line before pulling the ball back for Jurate to smack the backboard, just out of the reach of Surbiton’s Emily Rowlands, who was in the Welsh starting lineup.

Wales scored a consolation goal in the 55th minute, Phoebe Richards putting the ball away from the right of the circle, but Lithuania celebrated their first victory of the competition and fourth place.

Ukraine beat the Czech Republic 1-0 to finish top, with the Czech Republic finishing second.
