Wales Men, continuing their preparation for the upcoming EuroHockey Championships II in Glasgow in August, gained a morale boosting victory when they beat Poland 2-1 in the first of a three match series in Walcz on Friday evening.

Wales included Surbiton’s Lewis Prosser, who captained the squad and Gareth Furlong in their starting line-up, whilst Robert Mugridge who is joining Oxted for the 2017-18 season came on as a seventh minute substitute.

With the World rankings having been updated earlier this week, both Wales and Poland kept their previous rankings, with Wales at number 32 compared with Poland’s number 20.

However the 12 place difference in rankings didn’t affect Wales as they took the lead in the twelfth minute through Owain Dolan-Gray. Poland quickly equalised a minute later through Mikolaj Gumny.

The winning goal came nine minutes after half time thanks to Rhys Doherty, all three goals coming from open play.

The second game takes place on Saturday at 5 pm local time with the final game on Sunday morning at 11 am local time.
