After beating Slovakia 6-1 in their opening match at the Hockey Series Open in Zagreb, Wales Men were brought down to earth on Tuesday, going down 3-0 to Austria in their second game of the tournament.
Austria and Wales are the top two ranked teams in Zagreb, Austria ranked 19th in the world, with Wales ranked 24th.
Dominic Uher gave Austria the lead in the dying seconds of the first quarter Austria holding their one goal lead through to half time.
In the second half, it was Austria’s penalty corner routine which clinched their victory, Michael Körper striking in the 42nd and 55th minutes to complete the 3-0 win.
Surbiton’s Lewis Prosser, who handed over the captain’s armband to Luke Hawker and Gareth Furlong were both in the Welsh starting lineup.
Wales have a day off on Wednesday and face Switzerland in their third game on Thursday evening. Switzerland lost 2-0 to Croatia and beat Slovakia 2-1 in their first two games.
