Both of Surbiton’s Under-18 Super 6s teams narrowly missed out on semi-final qualification after finishing third in their pools.

The Girls, playing at Whitgift, were particularly frustrated as they drew all four games, remaining unbeaten in the tournament but failing to get the victory which would have seen them qualify for the knockout stages.

The Boys, at Telford came even closer, just losing out to Doncaster on goal difference after both teams won two and lost two of their pool matches.

The Girls, having drawn their first game at Repton 1-1 and Old Loughtonians 2-2, saw the incremental draw sequence continue in their two matches on day two, drawing 3-3 with Isca and 4-4 with Ben Rhydding.

Against Isca, Izzy Petter gave Surbiton a third minute lead, only for Emma Manton to score twice in the 7th and 12th minutes to turn the match on its head. Petter struck again in added time at the end of the first half, with Sasha Reed restoring Surbiton’s lead midway through the second half. Manton completed her hat-trick and denied Surbiton the win with an equalising goal two minutes from the end.

In the final pool game, it was Ben Rhydding who set the pace, Lucy Williams scoring after just two minutes from the penalty spot. Although Zoe Allchurch levelled within two minutes to leave the teams deadlocked at 1-1 at half time, Ben Rhydding were fast out of the traps at the start of the second half to establish a 3-1 lead, thanks to Lauren Ellwood and a second goal from Williams in the 13th and 15th minutes.Ella Bounous pulled a goal back in the 17th minute, only for Williams to complete her hat-trick within a minute to leave Surbiton trailing 4-2. Petter responded even quicker scoring in the 18th minute, and earned the draw with two minutes to play from a penalty corner.

Ben Rhydding lost 4-3 to Repton in the final.

The Boys, having beaten Old Merchant Taylors’ 3-2 and lost 4-3 to Doncaster on Saturday, beat Beeston 2-1 in their first pool game on Sunday. Charlie Neat scored in the third minute, with Damian Meertens adding what proved to be the winner in the 17th minute, Beeston scoring a consolation goal in the final minute through Oliver Pavis.

Their hopes of reaching the semi-finals were finally ended by Ashmoor, Surbiton going down 3-2. Samuel Taylor gave Ashmoor a second minute lead but although Rory Calnan levelled four minutes later, Ashmoor’s lead was restored by Tyenon Julyan-Webb in the eighth minute. Taylor cemented Ashmoor’s lead with his second goal of the game in the 14th minute, but although Max Lowrey scored for Surbiton in the 21st minute, they couldn’t find an equaliser and Ashmoor held on for the victory.

Ashmoor won all four pool games, but lost 5-2 to the eventual winners, Guildford in the semi-finals. Guildford beat Doncaster 7-4 in the final.
