England U18 Boys crashed to defeat against hosts Spain in the EuroHockey Championships on Wednesday night, losing 5-1 to be forced to defend their top flight status in Pool C.
England will carry over their 7-0 win over Poland and play France on Friday at 11.30 am BST and Ireland on Saturday at 1.45 pm, aiming to finish in the top two to avoid a drop to EuroHockey II.
In Santander, Spain took the lead in the second minute, Josep Cunill’s drag-flick giving the hosts an early boost. Within seconds of the start of the second quarter, Spain were awarded a penalty stroke following a penalty corner, Roger Figa doubling the lead.
Two minutes later, England were really up against it, Spain crossing from the left for Jan Vall to tap in from short range to leave England trailing 3-0.
Surbiton’s Morgan Males, captaining his country, gave England hope with a penalty corner drag-flick just before half time.
However, England were never in with a chance of the comeback they made against Germany as Figa scored his second goal of the game in the 37th minute and Ignacio Abajo scoring in the 49th minute, Spain’s fifth goal scored whilst England fielded a kicking back.
All four Surbiton players: Males, Adam Buckle, Conor Williamson and goalkeeper, Taylor Seager-Green were in the England starting lineup.
