Surbiton Under-18 Boys retained the England Hockey Under-18 Cup with a 4-2 win over Beeston in an exciting final at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Monday afternoon.
Surbiton took an early lead when Tom Dodwell scored on the turn at the right post in the fifth minute.
Gareth Griffiths had the opportunity to level matters after he pounced on a turnover but could only lob the ball onto the top of the goal in the 19th minute.
Zach Wallace doubled Surbiton’s lead four minutes later after the Beeston defence had repelled two previous shots, Wallace found the backboard at the team’s third attempt.
Three minutes into the second half, Beeston captain Ollie Rogerson gave his team hope of a comeback after he converted their first penalty corner of the match, but his Surbiton counterpart, Ben Park restored their two goal lead in the 45th minute, converting their fifth penalty corner.
Trailing 3-1, Beeston fought back again when James Sookias reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 53rd minute, again from a penalty corner.
There was controversy when Beeston’s Jack Rhodes received a red card in the 58th minute for a second yellow card offence, leaving the Nottingham club permanently down to ten players for the final twelve minutes of the match.
Surbiton only needed a minute to take advantage, Wallace scoring his second goal of the game with a reverse shot to effectively clinch the final.
Surbiton saw out the final seconds with an attacking penalty corner to conclude a match in which both sets of supporters gave their respective teams excellent vocal support.
