Surbiton’s Under-16 Girls began the defence of their national title in fine style with a 6-1 win over Southgate in their first Pool A game on Saturday morning.

Southgate fell behind in the second minute, Issy Carey scoring from open play and at half time trailed 4-0. Kitty Baccanello added a second goal in the 16th minute, Alice Klugman added the third goal with the only penalty corner conversion of the match and Carey notched her second goal a minute before the interval.

Baccanello struck again three minutes after half time, but Surbiton had to wait until the 44th minute to add a sixth goal, captain, Darcy Bourne on target.

To their credit, Southgate scored a consolation goal three minutes from time, Laura Ellis giving her supporters something to cheer.

In the other Pool A game, Bournemouth beat Repton 2-1 and Bournemouth are Surbiton’s next opponents at 3.45 pm on Saturday.

Surbiton face Repton at 12.55 pm on Sunday with the pool winners meeting in the final and the pool runners-up battling for third and fourth place.
