Surbiton’s Under-16 Boys just missed out on a place in the Junior Club Championships final at Wakefield by a one goal difference as their 4-1 win over Isca wasn’t quite enough after Bowdon beat Old Loughtonians 3-1.
Even if Isca hadn’t scored what turned out to be their only goal of the tournament, Surbiton would have missed out on goals scored.
All four goals were scored by Olly Witts, taking his tally to six and giving him a chance of finishing as the top scorer for the tournament.
Isca had lost 4-0 to Old Loughtonians and 5-0 to Bowdon but Surbiton had to wait until the 17th minute before Witts struck from a penalty corner. In the 22nd minute, Ollie Drummond levelled for Isca, also from a penalty corner to make the half time score 1-1, and with Bowdon drawing 1-1 with Old Loughtonians at half time, Surbiton needed to find goals in the second half.
With the game entering its late stages and Isca’s defence having held firm, it seemed that Surbiton had no hope at all, especially as Bowdon led Old Loughtonians 2-1.
Suddenly Surbiton caught fire with three goals in the last eight minutes, Witts restoring Surbiton’s lead in the 42nd minute from a penalty corner and then extending the lead to 3-1 with five minutes remaining, from open play.
A fourth goal with two minutes to play incredibly locked Surbiton and Bowdon together with identical records, but Surbiton hearts were broken when Michael Greenwood, who had put Bowdon ahead when Surbiton drew 1-1 in game one, scored a dramatic third goal in the final minute from a penalty corner to give Bowdon a vital 3-1 win.
Surbiton finished second in Pool B and will play the runners-up of Pool A for third place at 1410.
