Surbiton’s Under-14 Girls just missed out on lifting their national championships, going down to Guildford 3-1 on penalty strokes after a goalless final at Lee Valley.
Surbiton went through the tournament unbeaten without conceding a goal, but after their second goalless draw of the competition, Guildford prevailed in the penalty stroke barrage.
Surbiton started with a 1-0 win over Isca, Tali Gibbons scoring the only goal with an 18th minute penalty corner conversion.
In their second game, Surbiton drew 0-0 with Repton with the third and final pool games set to decide which team would reach the final.
Repton beat Isca 3-0, but a 5-0 win over Marlow ensured that Surbiton would pip Repton to a place in the final on goal difference, Surbiton on plus 6 with Repton on plus 4 after both teams finished on seven points.
Livia Loozen opened the scoring in the seventh minute from open play and then added a penalty corner conversion in the 14th minute to double the scoring.
Peggy Winterborn scored from open play just before half time to give Surbiton a 3-0 lead. Lucy Clemmow added a fourth in the nineteenth minute with Winterborn on target again with eight minutes to play as Surbiton eased into the final.
Guildford and Spencer’s battle to meet Surbiton went to the wire with both teams finishing with identical records in their pool. Guildford beat Spencer 4-2 on penalties to finish top of the pool and reach the final.
