Surbiton’s Under-14 Boys just missed out on national glory, losing 2-0 to Winchester in the final of the U14 Boys Championships at Lee Valley.
Harry Croft-Baker gave Winchester a first minute lead, with Rory Penrose doubling the lead from the penalty spot with just three minutes to play.
Surbiton started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Cambridge City, Finn Cooper’s penalty corner conversion in the 20th minute with Tom Lawes sealing the win from open play with just one minute remaining.
This was followed up by a 3-1 win over Harrogate, Ollie Shelton and Lawes stunning the Yorkshire club with goals in the third and fourth minutes. Alfie Weaver responded for Harrogate with a seventh minute penalty corner conversion, but Tom Fox completed the scoring with another open play to complete a breathtaking first eleven minutes. Incredibly there was no further scoring in the remaining nineteen minutes.
Surbiton then faced a pool decider against Cheltenham, Will Petter and Ross Benfors both scoring from open play in the 21st and 27th minutes to ensure that Surbiton met Winchester in the final.
