U14 Boys Junior Club Championships – 12 May 2018

Surbiton Squad: Sean Hope (GK); Josh Gilbertson, Nic Lamming, Thomas Lupoli, Jamie Taylor, Tom Fox (Capt.), Jonny Seymour, James Southorn, Martijn Boomsma, Sam Fox, James Cake, Tobias Chan, Dom Millard (GK), Dylan Parry, Will Petter, Harry Pink, Jake Thompson, Sam Burnley.

Surbiton’s Under-14 Boys finished fourth after going down 3-1 on penalties in the third place match against Canterbury at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Saturday. Surbiton remained unbeaten, but a draw against Clifton Robinsons in their second game allowed the Bristol based club to finish top of Pool A on goal difference.

Surbiton and Canterbury battled to a goalless draw in normal time to force a shootout decider. Canterbury led 2-0 though goals from Ben Young and Joe Mitchell after Tom Fox and Jamie Taylor failed to score from Surbiton’s first two efforts.

Tobias Chan also failed to score, but Thomas Izzard became the first Canterbury player to fail to score when on course to score the winner. Harry Pink finally found the goal for Surbiton but Kai Browne gave Canterbury the shootout victory.

Surbiton played their three pool games at Old Loughtonians and began their campaign with a 2-0 win over Stourport, Tom Fox scoring after just two minutes with a penalty corner and Jake Thompson adding a second goal in the 23rd minute.

What turned out to be the key game in the pool saw Surbiton held 1-1 by Clifton Robinsons. Tobias Chan put Surbiton ahead in the 22nd minute, only for Ollie Alker to equalise a minute later, both goals coming from open play.

Surbiton’s Jamie Taylor was unfortunate to receive a red card with three minutes to play after previously seeing both green and yellow. With Sam Fox also showing a green card and Josh Gilbertson shown yellow, Surbiton were under pressure, but battled hard to earn a point.

A brace of goals from Tobias Chan earned Surbiton a 2-0 win over Southgate, Chan scoring from open play in the 13th minute and with a penalty corner conversion eight minutes later. Clifton secured their place in the final with a 5-0 win over Stourport in their last match.
