Surbiton’s Under-12 Girls finished third at the National In2Hockey Championships in Nottingham, beating Guildford 1-0 in the third place playoff.
Surbiton, who had reached every final since 2011 when the final format changed from a championship pool to a single final match, winning five and losing one, were unlucky not to make the final yet again, just missing out on goal difference to Sevenoaks.
Surbiton were unbeaten throughout the tournament and just conceded one goal, in their initial 3-1 win over Thirsk.
Bournemouth were beaten 1-0, with Stourport losing 2-0 to set up a pool decider against Sevenoaks.
Surbiton needed to win by at least a two goal margin to reach the final, but both Sevenoaks and Surbiton’s defences held firm in a goalless draw which ended the reigning champions’ hopes.
Surbiton bounced back to beat Guildford 1-0 and can be proud of their performance.
Sevenoaks beat Worcester 2-0 in the final. Worcester had lost on penalty strokes to Surbiton in the 2013 final.
