Scotland Men began their Hockey Series Open campaign in Lousada, Portugal in fine style, beating Turkey 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
Scotland got off to the perfect start, Gavin Byers attacking for Cameron Golden to put the Blue Sticks ahead in the third minute. Golden doubled the lead a minute later as the Turkish defence was breached again as Scotland led 2-0 after just four minutes.
In the 19th minute Kyle White spun round to convert Scotland’s fourth penalty corner and dispatch the ball into the netting on his international debut. The umpires consulted before the goal was awarded.
White was on target again three minutes into the second half, once more rotating to smash the ball into the Turkish net. In the 36th minute, Golden completed his hat-trick running across goal from beyond the left post before positioning himself perfectly to score Scotland’s fifth goal.
Four minutes later, Callum Duke hit Turkey for six. For all their dominance, Scotland were unable to keep a clean sheet, Mehmet Demirel converting a penalty corner in the 44th minute.
With ten minutes to play, White joined Golden in the Blue Sticks hat-trick club, finding the backboard to put Scotland 7-1 ahead. A Scottish turnover led to the second Turkish goal, the ball pulled back for Omer Karakus to make the final score 7-2.
Both Surbiton players, Tim Atkins and Willie Marshall were in the Scottish starting lineup.
