England Men suffered their second heavy defeat in as many days at the Odisha Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar, India on Sunday with Australia won 8-1 with another clinical performance.

Australia saw their first penalty corner shot deflected over the crossbar in the sixth minute, but took the lead two minutes later, Blake Govers’ shot ending up in the bottom right corner of the goal.

England fell further behind a minute later when Tom Craig lifted the ball into the roof of the net after having his first shot saved by Surbiton’s Harry Gibson.

Australia’s third goal was the culmination of a sublime passing move, Craig starting and finishing the move, passing to Jake Harvie who found Govers to pass from the right for Craig to finish with forward momentum.

England could have found themselves 4-0 down at half time, but Govers hit the left post two minutes before the interval to give England a bit of luck against their clinical opponents.

Australia then turned the screw with three goals in three minutes early in the third quarter. Trent Mitton put away a rebound from Australia’s second penalty corner after Govers’ shot was saved in the 32nd minute. Australia then contrived to score two goals in the 34th minute, 14 seconds apart.

Tim Brand’s shot beat Gibson and rebounded off the right sideboard and then Craig completed his hat-trick as England’s defence struggled to cope with the Kookaburras’ blitzkrieg attack.

At the end of the third quarter and trailing 6-0, England finally breached the Australian defence, Barry Middleton unleashing a fierce shot from the left of the circle into the top right corner of the goal.

Australia added two goals in the final three minutes, both from penalty corners. Jeremy Hayward scored both, the first in the 57th minute and the second in the last minute from a re-awarded penalty corner.

James Gall joined Gibson in the English starting lineup with Luke Taylor (who had two penalty corner efforts saved) and Zach Wallace both coming on from the subs bench in the fifth minute.
