Surbiton Hockey Club is pleased to announce that Susie Gilbert will be Surbiton Ladies’ first signing of the summer.
Gilbert, 29 years old, is a former Great Britain and England player, and arrives at Sugden Road from HC Rotterdam in The Netherlands.
An attacking midfield player, Gilbert played for Cannock before joining the University of Birmingham. On graduation in 2012, she joined Reading before moving to the Netherlands to play for Rotterdam. Gilbert also has experience of playing in the Ford National League in New Zealand, as a member of the Midlands squad in 2016.
Gilbert made 159 international appearances, 99 for England and 60 for Great Britain, scoring 15 goals (9 Eng; 6 GB), She won her first international cap in 2007 for Great Britain against Argentina in Salta.
She was a member of the medal winning England squad at the 2010 World Cup, and at both the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well as winning gold at the 2015 European Championships.
On joining Surbiton, Gilbert said, “Playing in The Netherlands has been a great experience for me and I am looking forward to returning to the UK and joining Surbiton HC. I really enjoyed the different challenge posed by Dutch hockey and hope to be able to use this experience to help Surbiton both continue their domestic success and challenge strongly in Europe.”
Surbiton Ladies Head Coach, Brett Garrard said, “Susie is a player that I have always admired and I am very much looking forward to her joining the group. Her experience and attacking ability will add such quality to our midfield.”
