Surbiton Ladies’ hopes of promotion to the Jaffa Super 6s Premier Division suffered a setback when promotion rivals Sevenoaks came back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to win 5-3 in the first game on Sunday morning.
The defeat sent Sevenoaks up to second ahead of Surbiton meaning that matters are now out of Surbiton’s hands. Surbiton can drop to fourth if Beeston beat Brooklands Poynton, with Surbiton needing to beat the University of Birmingham to have any chance of going up.
Yet, after 6 minutes, Surbiton were cruising with a 2-0 lead, Lizzie Gittens scoring both goals. A penalty corner conversion in the third minute, followed by a penalty stroke three minutes later, seemed to put Surbiton in a strong position.
Jess Denniff scored Sevenoaks’ first goal in the tenth minute with a penalty corner conversion, with Gittens completing her hat-trick in the 16th minute. Samantha Danckert’s open play goal two minutes before half time meant that Surbiton held a slender 3-2 lead at the interval.
Just as Gittens had scored a first half hat-trick, the second half saw Susie Rowe score a hat-trick in reply to give the Kent club an excellent opportunity to secure consecutive promotions. Rowe’s penalty corner expertise reaped rewards in the 23rd, 25th and 39th minutes to clinch the 5-3 victory.
Both teams had three players sent to the sin-bin, Kate Reynolds and Hannah Bond receiving green cards for Sevenoaks in the first half, and Reneé Ojikutu in the second half. Anabel Herzsprung saw green late in the first half, with Surbiton receiving a double penalty with three minutes to play, their captain, Natalie Maclean banished for one minute and Ellie Tait for two after seeing green and yellow respectively.
Sevenoaks complete their campaign against the University of Birmingham at 1200 and Beeston play Buckingham, who have clinched promotion with two matches to play at 1600.
Surbiton play Birmingham at 1500.
