Surbiton Ladies bounced back in style after the disappointment of losing their EHCC quarter-final to Der Club an der Alster, beating GHC Ritm Grodno 7-0 for their biggest margin of victory in their last five years in European competition, eclipsing the 4-0 win over University College Dublin at Sugden Road in last season’s 7th/ 8th place playoff.

This year, Surbiton will face UHC Hamburg at 1145 (CET) for 5th/ 6th place in a rematch of the 2016 quarter-final in Bilthoven which Hamburg won 6-0.

Surbiton’s record victory wasn’t the only record to fall, Susie Catlin scored Surbiton’s quickest goal in Europe after just 30 seconds, seven seconds after the penalty corner was forced by Michaela Curtis and Erica Sanders.

The previous record was shared between Hollie Pearne-Webb and Jenna Woolven who both scored in the third minute against Russian club CSP Izmaylovo/ Krylatskoye in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Grodno had the chance to equalise in the third minute but Volha Shyntar missed from the penalty spot

Woolven added Surbiton’s second goal at the left post in the sixth minute and captain, Georgie Twigg converted Surbiton’s third penalty corner in the ninth minute to become Surbiton’s leading all time scorer in European competition with five goals.

Grodno could have trailed by more at the end of the first quarter, Erica Sanders unkowingly missing out on a hat-trick by rattling the crossbar from the left of the circle in the 13th minute.

In the 18th minute, youngster Izzy Petter scored a fine individual goal, running from outside the 23 metre line and working her way into the circle, falling in the effort of scoring Surbiton’s fourth goal.

Surbiton had to wait until four minutes into the second half for goal number five, a fine passing move enabling Sanders to score from close range. With eight minutes to play, Robyn Collins’ perfect drag-flick gave Surbiton a 6-0 lead.

The final goal came as a result of a turnover, Sanders scoring Surbiton’s seventh goal and becoming the third Surbiton player to score a brace in European competition and the second Surbiton player to score in the last minute of a game following Beckie Middleton’s farewell strike against University College Dublin at Sugden Road last year.

Goalkeeper Tess Shahbo replaced Sabbie Heesh in goal for the last six minutes to make her European debut.

UHC Hamburg beat Irish club, Loreto 4-0 after losing 3-2 to hosts AH&BC Amsterdam in the quarter-finals, having led 2-0. Hamburg include Charlotte Stapenhorst, scorer of five goals in their last match against Surbiton and Janne Müller-Wieland, scorer of the sixth goal and current Hamburg captain.
