Great Britain Women will be wondering what they have to do in the FIH Pro League after losing 1-0 to the Netherlands at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre after having two goals disallowed.

Great Britain threatened with a ball crossing the circle in front of the goal-line in the early seconds of the match. In the second minute, Surbiton’s Izzy Petter thought that she had given Great Britain a dream start with a close range finish but the Netherlands invoked a video referral which showed that Anna Toman’s cross from the right had reached Petter via Lily Owsley’s foot.

Lidewij Welten had the Netherlands’ only chance of the first quarter.

Great Britain threatened from their first two penalty corners in the 18th minute, Josine Koning making a fantastic double save from the second denying Surbiton’s Giselle Ansley and Hannah Martin in turn.

In the 26th minute, Petter shot over the crossbar as Great Britain continued to put the pressure on the Dutch defence.

Great Britain’s penalty corner routine continued to be a threat, Ansley just failing to connect with Sarah Jones in the 38th minute.

Great Britain goalkeeper, Amy Tennant also had to be alert to save two Dutch shots in the fourth quarter before Great Britain thought they had broken the deadlock for a second time.

In the 51st minute, Ansley’s drag-flick ended up in the top right corner but once again the Netherlands used their video referral option wisely, the goal being chalked off after it was proved that the ball didn’t leave the circle.

With the game seemingly headed for a shootout, Kelly Jonker sprinted into the circle in anticipation of a Dutch attack and when it came with Welten crossing from the left, Jonker’s deflection broke British hearts and showed that even when they weren’t playing to their potential, the Netherlands can still steal a win.

Martin, Ansley, Hollie Pearne-Webb and Petter were all in the Great Britain starting lineup with Jo Hunter coming on in the third minute and Sarah Evans a minute later. Goalkeeper Sabbie Heesh was in the squad but was not used.
