Current Surbiton Ladies player, Beckie Middleton is over in New Zealand playing for Auckland in this season’s Ford National League tournament which this year is being held in Wellington.

Middleton is in the Auckland squad alongside former Surbiton player and current Auckland captain, Julia King, who won the Ford National League with Auckland in 2014 and 2015 before Canterbury won the title in 2016.

Middleton played for two seasons with Central before skipping the 2016 season.

In previous seasons, the tournament has been played on a round-robin basis at various locations before the final positions were decided in a final round of classification matches.

This season the tournament is using the Hockey World League format of two pools of four teams with the final positions deciding which teams face each other in the quarter-finals at the start of the knockout format with two rounds of classification matches deciding fifth to eighth place.

Auckland are heading for a pool decider on Tuesday against reigning champions, Canterbury after both teams won their first two games. Auckland beat Capital 2-0 on Saturday in the first match of the competition, and followed up with a 2-1 win over Southern on Sunday. King gave Auckland a fifth minute lead from a penalty corner against Southern and along with Middleton was in the Auckland starting line-up for both matches.
