Surbiton Men’s second team beat the University of Nottingham 6-2 at Sugden Road on Sunday to reach the Men’s 2nd XI Cup final at Lee Valley on 1 May (push back 10 am).

The final suggested a straight forward win, but in truth the game was anything but. In a first half of few chances Arjan Drayton-Chana had a close range effort blocked by the keeper on four minutes. It took Surbiton 25 minutes to open the scoring when Aaron Blumfield found the net and it was the same player on target again as the first half neared its conclusion when he netted from close range, Surbiton leading 2-0 at half time.

The students looked more of a threat in the second half pulling a goal back within eight minutes of the restart, Guy Mills converting a penalty corner.

Six minutes later Ed Miller restored the two goal advantage, only for the visitors to score once again with 13 minutes remaining through Adam Laitt as the game opened up. With the Nottingham side lifted and sensing an equaliser it was a relief when Morgan Males followed up on a couple of thwarted efforts from teammates to score.

Late on, Miller scored his second of the game to ensure victory. With the university side replacing its keeper with a kicking back, Drayton-Chana went close as he flashed a powerful shot across the goal from a narrow angle and then unselfishly turned provider, setting up the supporting Blumfield to put the ball into an empty net to complete his hat-trick.

The second team can now look forward to a final against Southgate, who beat Brooklands Manchester University 2-1 in their semi-final, The Ladies’ second team face Clifton Robinsons on the same day. The Boys Under-18 team will be hoping to become the third Surbiton side at Lee Valley on 1 May by winning at Teddington in their semi-final. Surbiton Ladies could also be at Lee Valley that weekend if they win at Bowdon Hightown on 2 April, the Investec Women’s Cup final scheduled on 30 April.
