Surbiton Men’s Zach Wallace and Luke Taylor helped England to a 2-2 draw in the third place playoff at the Four Nations Tournament in Valencia on Sunday, but Ireland came from behind in the subsequent shootout to win 4-3.

After a goalless first half, England took the lead in the 32nd minute, Barry Middleton attacking down the right before crossing for Wallace to smash the ball into the roof of the net and score his first international goal.

Four minutes later, Ireland were level after Eugene Magee scored from open play. In the 49th minute, Taylor’s perfectly place drag-flick restored England’s lead, but Sean Murray notched Ireland’s second equaliser with just four minutes remaining to set up the shootout.

England led 2-0 in the shootout thanks to Harry Martin and Wallace, but after Michael Robson fired wide, Eugene Magee beat Surbiton’s Harry Gibson to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Phil Roper failed to score enabling Alan Sothern to level the score at 2-2. Adam Dixon and Shane O’Donoghue exchanged successful attempts, but after Middleton was thwarted, Daragh Walsh scored to give Ireland the bronze medals.

Gibson along with David Goodfield and James Gall, was in the England starting lineup with Wallace and Taylor both coming off the subs bench. Brendan Creed was rested.
