Surbiton’s Luke Taylor opened the scoring for Great Britain but Germany came back from 3-2 down to win 5-3 with three goals in a four minute spell late in the match in Mannheim on Monday evening.

Taylor converted a penalty corner in the tenth minute, only for Dieter Linnekogel to level nine minutes later in the same manner. Barry Middleton restored Great Britain’s lead from open play in the 21st minute, only for Linnekogel to equalise for a second time three minutes before half time.

Tom Carson gave Great Britain the lead for the third time in the 38th minute before Germany mounted a blitzkrieg attack to stun Great Britain.

Dan Nguyen Luong equalised in the 54th minute, Christopher Rühr gave Germany the lead for the first time three minutes later and Marco Miltkau made sure that Germany would take a 1-0 lead in the three game series with a clincher goal two minutes from time.

Surbiton’s Harry Gibson was in the British goal for the first two quarters before being replaced by George Pinner. Alan Forsyth and Brendan Creed were the other Surbiton players in the British starting line-up. Taylor, Chris Grassick, David Goodfield and James Gall all came on from the substitutes bench.

The second game in the series is on Tuesday evening (6 pm GMT) and the third game is on Thursday at 10 am GMT.
