Surbiton’s Richard Hildreth has been selected to play for Canada at the Pan American Cup tournament in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from 4-12 August.

Canada have already qualified for the 2018 World Cup by finishing fifth at the Hockey World League Semi-Final tournament at Lee Valley in June, but the winners of the Pan American Cup will automatically qualify as one of the five continental champions, possibly enabling more teams to qualify from the Hockey World League Semi-Final tournaments.

The Pan American Cup is an eight team tournament with the teams initially split into two pools of four.

Canada are in Pool B with Brazil, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago.

Pool A consists of Argentina, Chile, The United States and Venezuela.

The top two teams in each pool qualify for the semi-finals with the remaining teams battling it out for fifth to eighth place.

The tournament is held every four years and in 2013, Canada finished as runners-up to Argentina after going down 4-0 in the final in Brampton, Toronto. Gonzalo Peillat scored all four goals.
