Surbiton Men are closer to qualifying for the finals of the Jaffa Super Sixes Championships after drawing 5-5 with Canterbury at Bromsgrove School.

With Hampstead & Westminster and Sevenoaks pulling away from the rest of the division, the battle is on for the remaining two places and Surbiton and Canterbury were both in contention.

The game was another thriller which saw the lead change hands four times with neither side ever more than one goal ahead.

Sam Barrett opened the scoring for Canterbury in the eighth minute only for Surbiton’s Niall Stott to equalise five minutes later, both goals coming from penalty corners. Barrett restored Canterbury’s lead in the 17th minute from open play but Surbiton hit back with two goals in as many minutes to lead 3-2 at half time. Arjan Drayton Chana levelled in the 18th minute with David Goodfield giving Surbiton their first lead of the match in the 19th.

Surbiton maintained their lead until the 29th minute when Barrett completed his hat-trick from a penalty corner to restore parity. In the 32nd minute Harrison Smith put Canterbury 4-3 ahead but Dave Beckett’s penalty corner conversion in the 36th minute and William Marshall’s open play goal a minute later turned the game around and left Canterbury facing defeat.

Tom Bean rescued a point for Canterbury with two minutes to play.
