Surbiton Men lost their opening match of the Super 6s Championships Premier Division campaign, going down 6-2 to newly promoted Hampstead & Westminster.
Hampstead were making their debut in the top flight of English national hockey and made a quick impression leading 5-0 at the halfway mark.
Sam Ward gave Hampstead the lead in the sixth minute with Kei Kaeppler striking twice in the eighth and tenth minutes, all three goals coming from open play.
Richard Smith converted a penalty corner in the 13th minute with Anton Pohling adding the fifth goal four minutes before half time.
Surbiton fought back in the second half as Alan Forsyth converted penalty corners in the 31st and 33rd minutes but Smith converted his second penalty corner of the match with two minutes to play to give the Premier Division debutants all three points.
Surbiton face Wimbledon in their second game at 4.30 pm on Saturday.
