Surbiton Men have gone to the top of the Jaffa Super 6s Premier Division table after battling to a 7-4 win over a Loughborough Students team still looking for their first victory.
With Team Bath Buccaneers losing their first match, 6-3 to East Grinstead, Surbiton’s win took them above Team Bath on goal difference, although Wimbledon are two points behind both teams with a game in hand.
Surbiton were stunned when Loughborough took the lead in the second minute, captain Murray Collins scoring from open play. Loughborough’s lead lasted just five minutes, Surbiton’s captain replying in the seventh minute, also from open play.
Seb Ansley, brother of Surbiton’s Giselle, restored Loughborough’s lead in the tenth minute, only for Rob Farrington to equalise in the 13th minute, and leave the teams to turn round at half time level at 2-2.
Surbiton took the lead for the first time within seconds of the restart, Willie Marshall giving the defending champions a 3-2 advantage.
This time it was Loughborough’s turn to fight back, Darren Cheesman making the score 3-3 in the 23rd minute.
In the 27th minute, Surbiton’s Alan Forsyth put his team 4-3 up and this time there was to be no recovery by the Students. Three goals in two minutes finally allowed Surbiton to pull away, Forsyth converting a penalty corner in the 35th minute with Marshall scoring a minute later and Farrington striking in the 37th minute.
Fabio Reinhard scored Loughborough’s fourth goal in added on time from a penalty corner, but it was only to prove to be a consolation as Surbiton took another step towards finals day.
Surbiton take on Team Bath in a key match at 1730 on Saturday.
